Why StuGyver?
I craft memories!
I am a maker that makes one-of-a-kind items to contain your memories of a person, place, or event.
Lots of makers can make lots of things. I make items that tell a story…your story.
"Cherishable" Heirlooms
It all started with crafting heirloom gifts for my nieces’ weddings when I realized the items would always remind them of their “Crazy Uncle Stu”.
Then, my dad passed and shortly after, my mom. So, I used the walnut and cherry from my dad’s workshop and found that working with his wood and his tools was cathartic.
Heirlooms to memorialize a person, place, or event are my favorite things to craft.
Solutions to Problems You Didn't Know You Had
Necessity is the mother of invention but sometimes you just need a “thingy” to do this, that, or the other.
From a better table for the love seat to a cocktail caddy for Manhattans, sometimes “custom” is the only option.
Innovative Creativity
I’m not as creative as I wish I was, but I’m wicked good at building upon the creativity of others—and I’ve worked with some world-class creatives!
All I need is the germ of an idea and my mind takes over, quickly brain-storming ideas to create something unique!
FAQ
What are your favorite things to make?
It may sound morbid, but making cremation urns brings me peace as my first one, my dad’s, did. I don’t think there are any deeper memories than those of a loved one—including pets.
Do I have to send you materials?
I have access to virtually any type of wood—much of which I harvest locally. The important thing is the “memory” so if you have a special piece of wood—even if it is otherwise “throw-away”—I may have you ship it or deliver it to me to use in your piece.
For the right piece—and the right budget—I may come to you to harvest the raw materials.
What skills do you have?
As a woodworker, I am quite skilled at traditional woodworking including joinery and finishing. I absolutely love turning wood on my lathe and am getting better at carving.
I’m now doing a lot with resin casting and silicone molding.
What kinds of materials do you work with?
Although I’ve spent 50 years working with all types of wood, I have now added resin casting and even molded parts to my repertoire. But really, I’m only limited by our imagination.
Where do you get your inspiration?
Ideally, the inspiration comes from you, but I’ve lived a lot of years and travelled a lot of miles, meeting lots and lots of people. Their stories are my inspiration.
Where did the name StuGyver come from?
If anything got me my moniker “StuGyver” it is how I can find solutions to problems you don’t even know you have!
Remember the 80s TV show, MacGyver? ChatGPT describes him as: “Resourceful, quick-thinking, and ingenious problem-solver who uses science, common sense, and whatever materials are at hand to get out of impossible situations”. That’s me!
Originally began with me creating solutions to my friend Meghan’s neighborhood parage floats, it has evolved into anything and everything under the sun.
Enter StuGyver!
Do you work with Metal?
Although I can cut and grind metals, I’m not very skilled or tooled-up for metal—yet. If I need to incorporate pieces of metal into my work, I will, but currently not a welder or fabricator.
Do you have a YouTube Channel?
I am very anxiously trying to stand up a StuGyver YouTube channel. Ideally, I’ll capture the creation of your item on video to share with you, and you can share with your network.
Stay tuned:-)
